P90X2 Review – Is P90X2 Right For Me? What Exactly Is It?
You will learn in my P90X2 review that this is a new evolution of training to get you in the best shape of your life. This program is also 90 days just like the original P90X but its about increasing your results and changing your body composition even more. Consider this program to be the next wave of applied science that focuses on functionality, agility, balance and mobility. The muscle confusion concept is still there for each and every workout with all different types of sets, supersets and even learning to be on unstable ground as you workout. Having a P90X2 review like this will give you a better understanding of exactly what you are getting yourself into and what you can ultimately gain.
P90X2 Review – Are You Ready?
You will take a the fit test before you start just like you did in the original P90X. I can honestly tell you in this P90X2 review that I don’t feel that you have to be a P90X graduate to do this program but it is a good foundation to have before starting. Its not necessarily harder but different. As stated above its about functional fitness and for example learning how to balance on one leg while doing bicep curls makes you work your core. So lets just dive into this P90X2 review!
P90X2 Review – Real World Functionality
In this P90X2 review there are quite a few points to consider when it comes to the science behind the program.
- Functionality – It addition to getting into amazing shape this program takes into consideration everyday physical movements like throwing a ball or working in the yard. Every move applies to real world functionality. As people age we see their bodies breaking down in so many different ways from bad habits that were developed over time. In P90X2 these moves are about re-training and strengthening those parts of your body that you need to survive in everyday life so you stay agile and strong at the same time.
- Instability – Your balance and coordination is challenged in this program and its an extension of your functionality. Some of the workouts use medicine balls. Some use a stability ball. By using tools like this it confuses your muscles and core even more because you are no longer on a flat base. Some of the exercises use just half your body at a time i.e. standing on one leg and doing shoulder presses so you throw everything off balance in your body.
- Form Is King – Another thing considered in my P90X2 review is that form is king. There is no such thing as arching your back, slumping over or simply cheating. You will learn that when you keep the proper form and realize that you will not only avoid injury but will produce better results. Bad form is detrimental to your success in this program and your body reacts better to when you use proper form.
- Mobility, Flexibility and Neuro-Integrated Stretching – This program has incorporated four very different flexibility techniques.
- Myofascial Release – this is done with a foam roller which will help smooth out all the connective tissue that covers all of your muscles. This allows your muscles to recover more quickly and function even better. Its like a body massage of your specific muscle groups.
- Static Stretching – holding certain stretching positions over an extended period of time not only helps your muscles stretch out but helps with your recovery as well. This is the type of stretching that most of us are used to.
- Ballistic Stretching – We all remember these from the original P90X and they are here as well. Huggers, arm circles etc are all still part of the program.
- Neuro-Integrated Stretching – To keep this simple this is a technique that uses two stretching principles that basically contract one muscle group in order to lengthen another. This is done through the assistance of a resistance band, towel or stability ball.
P90X2 – Three Training Phases
In this P90X2 review I would like to discuss the three training phases.
- Phase 1 – The first phase to discuss in my P90X2 review focuses on your foundation or more specifically your attachment to the ground. When you get used to securing your balance on the ground it will help you get better results and perform better later on.
- Phase 2 – This is about strengthening your foundation even more and will very similar to the original P90X. Workouts such as P90X2 plyocide. These are exercises such as push ups but now you will do them on things such as a stability ball or medicine ball. This allows for more unstable ground movements but in another way to help with movements in everyday life.
- Phase 3 – This is my favorite phase and favorite part in writing about this P90X review. The key to this phase is P.A.P or Post Activation Potentiation which refers to “heavy loading prior to an explosive movement induces a high degree of central nervous system stimulation, resulting in greater motor unit recruitment and force.” ~ Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. Basically you are doing a weight resisted movement like squats followed by an explosive movement such as power jumps immediately thereafter. This can increase the amount of power and results in people that do movements like this. This is saved for phase 3 so your body is ready for moves like this. Let me tell you these movements kicked my butt!!
P90X2 Review – Equipment Needed
I want to be straightforward in my P90X2 review and tell you what equipment you definitely need for this program. The one thing that this program does offer is the hotel version of the workout. Basically in every workout dvd there is always one person in the video doing a version of the exercise that can be down in an hotel room with minimal equipment. Some bands, a towel and a small area is all you need. But if you want to take it to the extreme level here is the equipment that is needed.

- Medicine Ball (at least two)
