Is The P90X2 Equipment The Same As P90X?
The P90X2 equipment does involve a little more. So the short answer to this is no. You will use different equipment throughout P90X2. However a lot of the same equipment from P90X is used as well such as the chin up bar, dumbbells, resistance bands, yoga mat etc. P90X2 is a different type of exercise science because it brings in functionality, instability and mobility. Functional fitness or movements from everyday life are applied here. As people age their bodies start breaking down in so many ways from bad habits. This is where functionality comes into play. You will be doing moves on unstable ground that will strengthen your core and extend on the functionality of this program. Additionally mobility is applied through specific stretching such as neuro-integrated stretching. To allow P90X2 to be successful in the areas of functionality, instability and mobility a variety of new equipment is used in this program. However, Beachbody takes into account that many people travel for business on a constant basis. Therefore they always have someone in each workout doing the modified version of each move so you can do it right from your hotel room. Lets now specifically talk about the P90X2 equipment that you will need.
What P90X2 Equipment Is Used In The Program?
I am going to go over all the P90X2 equipment that is used throughout the program and explain a little bit about each piece.
- Resistance Bands – I think that almost everyone should have a set of resistance bands for the P90X2 equipment inventoy. Even if you plan on using dumbbells during this program there are some moves that use the resistance bands. Plus you always find yourself at one time or another having to travel and can use these while your away.
- Dumbbells – While bands can be used as a substitute there is no replacement for a good set of weights. For guys a range from 10lbs to 40 lbs will be fine and girls from 5lbs – 20lbs should be fine as well. I personally use the Bowflex Select Tech dumbbells. They are a little more money but they do the trick.
- Stability Ball – This piece of P90X2 equipment is almost a must. As I stated above P90X2 is about training through instability and nothing makes exercise moves more unstable than a good stability ball. I never used to use this ball before but I have learned to love it and quite frequently incorporate it into a lot of my P90X moves as well.
- Foam Roller – The P90X2 equipment wouldn’t be complete without the foam roller. I personally used the rumble roller. You will learn how to truly stretch your body out and how the foam roller can help you do that. The key to this is a technique called myofascial release. This will help with muscle and joint pain.
- Chin-Up Max – So you hate doing pull ups or you struggle with doing them everyday. Well instead of using a chair to help you with chin ups you can use the chin up max which will allow for better form and more results because you can do more repetitions with the chin up max.
- Chin Up Bar – This piece of P90X2 piece of equipment is simple old school. The doorway chin up bar is used throughout the program and to make it more realistic they use the same type of door way chin up bar that you will use at home.
- Medicine Balls – I think these balls are essential to all the P90X2 equipment. You can get away with just two balls but having four is ideal. Three is a little better. A few of the moves do require the use of four balls at once but rarely are you using all four balls. Most moves can be done with just two balls. I recommend the 8 lb balls to start. They are sturdy enough for all the moves.
- Push Up Stands – Tony Horton’s power stands are like stabile medicine balls. You can get a deeper range of motion during many exercises and avoid all the strain on your wrists.
- Yoga Mat– This is a standard piece of the P90X2 equipment for both yoga as well as your ab workout days. You can always use a good yoga mat!
- Yoga Blocks – For those of you like myself that still struggle with the yoga the yoga block makes it easier for you to get in those difficult positions and therefore have proper form.
What P90X2 Equipment I Highly Recommend You Do Have!
Out of all the P90X2 equipment above here is exactly what I used and I feel is more than enough. I did use my dumbbells throughout the program but did substitute resistance bands for some of the moves. You can’t go wrong with some resistance bands. I feel the chin up bar is a must because you will be using it throughout the program. I used the stability ball every single day and feel it is essential so you get the full effect of this program. That also goes for the medicine balls as well. You don’t use them everyday but when you do you will see the advantages of having them and what you will miss out on if you don’t have this piece of the P90X2 equipment. I used Tony Horton’s power stands as well. I simply enjoy the deeper range of motion that you can get when doing push ups because I know I can get greater results. I always had a yoga block and yoga mat and I feel this is almost a given. You need both of these pieces of the P90X2 equipment. Last but not least is the foam roller. I purchased the rumble roller but you are fine with just simple foam roller. However, I do feel that this is a necessary piece of the P90X2 equipment because it is used quite frequently throughout the program.
