What Exactly Is A Rumble Roller or Foam Roller?
I love my rumble roller!!!! I wish I knew about this piece of exercise equipment years ago! I’m sure you are all wondering what exactly the rumble roller is. So let me explain to you exactly what it is and what it actually does. The rumble roller is a way of conducting soft tissue therapy on your muscles that are suffering from soreness, pain, tightness and even restricted movement. The actual term of this approach is called myofascial release. Fascia is the soft tissue portion of your body that supports the connective tissue within yourself and more specifically your muscles. When you exercise for an extended period of time this soft tissue is limited in its ability to support your body because of overuse, soreness, tightness and even sometimes lack of activity. By using the rumble roller it will actually help your soft tissue by allowing it to extend in a manner where your muscles can relax and recover.
How The Rumble Roller Works
The idea is to roll the foam or rumble roller over the area that is tender i.e. calf and once you find that sensitive spot or trigger point you stop and let the roller sit there for 30-60 seconds. This will give the roller time to actually apply the myofascial release and let your muscles relax and recover. I will admit the first time I used this it made me cringe. It is like a massage with some serious kneading of your muscles. For the first couple of seconds I’m saying to myself “oh man this hurts,” but within seconds you feel the release and the sense of calm. It feels like the knot in your muscle is literally being worked out. I embrace my rumble roller whenever I use it because it feels like I am getting a great sports massage right in my own home. I frequently use my rumble roller while I’m watching television at night before I go to bed so I feel all stretched out. The feeling really gets amplified when you are sore and then go and use the foam roller. Every inch of your body is sensitive and letting the roller do all the work is absolutely priceless. Some people think that you are actually suppose to roll the roller up and down your muscles but actually this is exactly what your not supposed to do. You are supposed to find the spot as I mentioned above and literally sit on it. I let my rumble roller do the work and usually stay in that position for about a minute. Once I feel total release I will then find a different spot.
Foam Roller VS Rumble Roller
The rumble roller is a much more effective tool than the traditional foam roller. Why? When you actually foam roll the soft tissue with a standard foam roller does do the job but its effect is limited because it can’t quite get the depth of a rumble roller. The rumble roller surface has a series of bumps or nuggets that are flexible that are very similar to a massage therapists hands as I mentioned above. Its a true rumble roller massage. The kneading action you can get on your muscles is increased because as you move the rumble roller the actually bumps will knead your soft tissue in different directions and therefore get a much deeper myofascial release. Another cool thing about the rumble roller is the bumps are not as hard as your bones but firmer than your soft tissue so if it rolls over any bony parts of your body it will be deflected away to avoid any type of serious pain. The bumps are approximately 2 inches apart which allows multiple bumps to make contact with the same muscle tissue on any given trigger point. Sometimes I really find a spot that feels really good so I will lean in a direction that will allow all the pressure to come from only bump which gives me an even deeper massage. This is like heaven! The rumble roller comes in two different sizes and firmness.

As for firmness it comes standard and extra firm. I have the at home model with the standard firmness which I feel is more than enough I guess you can really turn it up a notch by getting the extra firm model but I don’t feel that is necessary. I can honestly say that after using both the standard roller and the rumble roller the comparison was night and day. The rumble roller has a lot more benefits to it than the traditional foam roller. The rumble roller is hands down the way to go.
